I enjoyed this novelette quite a bit. It is set in Victorian Era London and has a few touches of a steampunk world, including airships, innovative weapons, and small, brass globes that freeze when squeezed. The heroine, Viola, uses these globes while bartending to chill drinks without diluting the alcohol. Of course, bartending is not her only employment. Viola is a bounty-hunter known as the Brass Violet and uses her connections to scope out her high society targets.
Viola’s proficiency attracts the attention of another bounty hunter, Edward Van Clef. The two are rivals, often going after the same bounty, and if Viola had a choice, she would avoid the man known as “The Fox” completely. However he makes her an offer too irresistible to resist. Van Clef has blueprints to an estate where Viola’s next bounty resides and she has a contract to provide bartending services at a gala event thrown at the estate. They need each other to pull off the heist and retrieve the bounty. But can they trust each other?
I would rate Stolen Petals “R” (adults only) for a steamy scene between the two protagonists and for non-graphic violence.
Stolen Petals successfully blends action, adventure, and passionate romance into a thoroughly enjoyable and entertaining reading experience. The story builds and unfolds at a steady pace with moments of emotion, suspense, and action interwoven throughout the narrative. Van Clef and Viola are two formable opponents who—to their great surprise—are worthy of each other. What will win out in the end—ego or the urge to explore a relationship with someone who could be a genuine partner?
About Katherine McIntyre: I split my time writing and working my day job as a massage therapist. If it’s a creative pursuit though, chances are I’ve dabbled in it. Hell, I’ve played around with soapmaking, beer brewing, cupcake baking, tea blending and everything else under the midday sun. At the end of the day, my constant is always reading, writing and editing. I’m an Aries-Taurus cusp–which to any astrology buffs should tell you plenty.
I hit the East Coast convention circuit pretty hard and chances are, you can find me vending for Solstice Brews while simultaneously promoting my books. As for more journalistic writing, I’m the founder, an editor, and a writer on Caffeine Crew.
