About the Author

The toughest thing about writing . . .

I have a full time job, a boisterous family, and a tiny house. Finding time and a place to write is the most challenging aspect of this craft. So, I have to steal my writing moments: Lunch hours, waiting rooms (I keep a pad of paper in my purse ((no I can’t stand trying to type on my phone, but I’ve heard of people who have written books that way)) late nights when everyone else is asleep (if I can stay awake), boring office meetings (looks like I’m taking notes). It’s not always efficient, and I don’t write fast, but books can be written, and finished, a few words at a time.

Favorite Novels:

Harry Potter, of course. The Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon (which I’ve read since I was 16 when the 2nd novel came out, but I like to pretend the series ended at A Breath of Snow and Ashes). Anything by Neil Gaimon, but especially American Gods. Anything by Margaret Atwood, but especially The Handmaid’s Tale. A Winter’s Tale by Mark Helprin. His Dark Materials series by Phillip Pullman. The original The Princess Bride by William Goldman. The Dresden Files by Jim Butcher. The Kate Daniel’s series by Ilona Andrews. The Fever series by Karen Marie Moning, and the Lady Julia Gray series by Deanna Raybourn.

Favorite Movies:

I am a superhero junkie, so if it’s got a man or woman in a tight suit in it, I’ve probably seen it and loved it. I also can quote The Princess Bride verbatim, and I know more about the Star Wars world than I should admit. Oh, and Underwold. Anytime The Green Mile, Shawshank Redemption, or Oh Brother Where Art Thou are on, I’ll stop and watch them. I also love Doris Day and Elvis movies.

In the same vein, I’ll pretty much go see anything directed by Guillermo Del Torro, Wes Anderson, Joss Whedon, Baz Lurhman, and Tim Burton. I should have a woman director in there, so I’ll go with Katheryn Bigelow. Might seem like an easy choice, but she did Hurt Locker, Zero Dark Thirty AND Point Break. How awesome is that?

Favorite Actors/Actresses:

I love an actor who can disappear into a role—the wackier the better. Therefore my favorite actors tend to be of the character variety. Currently I am crazy about Tilda Swinton. I think she’s amazing and like a chameleon. I also love Alan Rickman, Ron Pearlman, Gary Oldman, Johnny Depp, Bruce Spence, Doug Jones, and Paul Bettany. I love kickass women actresses, too, so Charlize Theron and Scarlett Johansson always get my vote.

Advice to aspiring authors:

My mother once told me: There are a finite number of “no’s” in the world. Eventually you’ll find them all, and then only the “yes’s” will be left.

So, find a thick skin and put it on and never take it off. This game is all about rejection, and you’ll never succeed if you can’t stick it out until you get through all those “no’s”.

When Solina Mundy’s twin brother is murdered, she travels to his home in Alaska to search for answers.

She discovers ancient gods and monsters.

And she might be one of them.
