About the Author

I started writing . . .I have been writing since I was a child but it wasn’t until I was in my fifties that I managed to find a publisher for my first novel The Exile of Elindel (Elwardain Chronicles I), which I originally wrote under another title in 1977.

What I love most about writing . . .Being able to escape from the real world for a while. I find writing very therapeutic. I also enjoy creating new characters.

The toughest thing about writing . . .Is finding time to do it when you have to work for a living. Also, I sometimes have problems with getting my ideas to work on paper.

The writer I most admire . . .JK Rowling for her perseverance, her intellect, and her generosity. She made reading fashionable again and has created something that will stand the test of time.

My lifelong hero . . .If I had one, it would have to be Horatio, Lord Nelson. I have no idea why his life is so compelling but I do love that period of history and those great ships of the British navy.

If I wasn’t a writer, I would be . . .As a child I wanted to be a vet and later a political cartoonist! But my aspirations have always revolved around writing.

Other than writing, I am really good at . . .proofreading, housekeeping (my day job), Tarotmancy.

When I am writing, I listen to . . .the silence. I can’t concentrate if I am in a noisy environment, but I listen to music when relaxing and it helps me find inspiration for my writing. The Exile of Elindel was inspired by a piece of music I heard on a juke box.

Favorite Novels: Precious Bane by Mary Webb. I have read so many great books I can’t remember my favourites, but this is one that really made an impression on me.

Favorite Movies: Back to the Future/ Forrest Gump/The Star Trek, Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings franchises/ The Way Back/Enemy Mine.

Favorite Actors/Actresses: William Shatner* (yes, really!), Judi Dench, Ian McKellen, Derek Jakobi, Penelope Wilton, Benedict Cumberbatch, Linda Basset, Claire Danes.

Favorite Sport Team: I hate sport!

Favorite Foods: Anything vegan and I am particularly addicted to Marmite on toast.

Modern convenience I can’t live without: Is a computer a convenience? I’m lost without one anyway.

Advice to aspiring authors: Don’t give up. It took me thirty years to find a publisher. Keep editing your work and make it the best it can be. When you submit your work, follow the publisher’s submission guidelines EXACTLY or they won’t read your submission.

*Short Note From Chris:  I concur on William Shatner being a favorite actor.  Star Trek Fan for Life!
