I have had dry, sensitive skin and allergies for my entire life so it is difficult to find skin care products that work well or that I can continue to use. I try a lot of different product lines, find one that I like, and then use it for awhile until my skin “objects” by turning red, breaking out, or some other nonsense. This is one reason I love subscription boxes—I can sample a bunch of brands without spending too much money.
Certain brands, though, have stood the test of time for me. I can continue to use them year after year without difficulty. I do “switch it up” from season-to-season, but I have several brands that I consider my “go-to” products. (I am not a dermatologist; I am sharing what works for me.)
One such inexpensive brand is e.l.f. I first came upon them when I purchased a brush set through Amazon. And really—that name! I know it stands for Eyes Lip Face, but I prefer to imagine the company owners are Tolkien fans. They have many excellent makeup tools and makeup products. I was excited, then, when e.l.f. started offering a hydrating line of skin care.
A product I have used daily for the last few months is the e.l.f. Hydrating Bubble Mask. You apply it to a damp face, the product foams up, and then you can rinse it off. This takes 60 seconds or so and, while it looks goofy when it foams, it feels fabulous. I am also a fan of the packaging. You push on the top and the appropriate amount pumps up from the center of the jar. (Yes—I am a kid at heart!) In a practical sense it keeps the product away from the air and makes it easy to use with wet hands.
Another item from the e.l.f. hydrating line that I enjoy is the Hydrating Water Sheet Mask. Over the last few years I have discovered the benefits of sheet masks for my skin and use them once or twice a week. I have tried quite a few brands. Many brands have been a bit harsh on my skin (I don’t like it when it stings or turns my face red!), but the ones that soothe and hydrate are simply wonderful.
Because of the way that masks fit on a face, it’s hard to do anything other than sit/recline back and relax. Thoughts of work or chores simply melt away for a blissful 15 minutes or more. (I vote for more!) After applying a mask I like to listen to an audio book or music while I do some stress-relieving deep breathing exercises. If you are planning on sipping water/tea/coffee, make sure you have a straw.
The e.l.f. mask is a single use sheet mask. It is enriched with purified water, aloe, and hyaluronic acid. According to webmd.com, hyaluronic acid is a substance that is naturally present in our bodies and has been used for treating wounds, burns, skin ulcers, and in moisturizers.
When you remove the e.l.f. mask from the packet, it is completely saturated with the moisturizing serum. If you do not apply it over the sink, I recommend having a paper or cloth towel on hand to catch any drips. Most masks have this “extra bit” of serum in the package, which can be spread on the neck, arms, or other body parts. I like to massage the serum onto my hands, especially if I have been gardening.
I really enjoy the e.l.f. Hydrating Water Sheet Mask. It has a very fresh, light scent. It’s very soothing and cooling on the skin. During the initial application I didn’t feel any sensitivity or stinging. It does not leave a sticky residue behind. I’ve used it several times and it leaves my skin feeling soft and hydrated.
What new drugstore skincare products do you like? If you have any of the items in the e.l.f. line, let me know what you think in the comments below. If you have a suggestion about what I should try for my next “Buy It and Try It,” let me know that too!
