Worth the Price? Walmart VS. Target Beauty Boxes

It’s no secret to readers of this blog that I enjoy receiving subscription boxes. I think they’re a good value and they offer an opportunity to try products or brands that I might not have found on my own. Let’s face it – the world is filled to the brim with different health and beauty items. With all of these products clamoring for attention it could be easy to overlook a brand that has a smaller advertising budget. So subscription boxes fill a niche–especially for Indy brands.

Walmart Beauty

Walmart beauty is a $5 a month subscription box. The service advertises itself as providing free products. The consumer only pays $5 for shipping and handling.

This month’s box contained travel size shampoo and conditioner from Pantene, Dove advanced care antiperspirant/deodorant, Dove body wash, and a travel size Tresemme hairspray. The one real Indy brand product is from ecotools.

The mask remover sponges are the most interesting product in the box. They are reusable and made with natural cellulose to wipe away facemasks. They are cruelty free and vegan. The sponges boost the effectiveness of masks by gently exfoliating skin for a smoother more radiant experience.

I did find this to be effective at removing masks. An added bonus–they are both reusable and disposable. Mud masks can stain a regular washcloth or towel. These mask remover sponges are easily washed in the sink and can be discarded when appropriate. Since they are reusable, $2.50 for a pack of two sponges seem like a good price point.

Are the rest of the items in the box worth $2.50? Yes–I can see the value in the box. And it had one product from a brand I have never tried.

Target Beauty

Although I put the Target box under the subscription box category, it is a product you have to purchase month to month on their website.  You cannot sign up for a subscription. The price also varies from month to month. This month’s box was $7.

The box contained travel-sized Hawaiian Tropic suntan lotion with SPF 30 , Aussie 3 Minute Miracle leave in conditioner , a Shick Hydro Razor, a NYX concealer, and a John Frieda Beach Salt Spray for Blond Hair. (I will be giving this to a friend with blond hair.)

The box contained two indy beauty products.  Look Beauty’s soothing and calming mask is advertised as a skin moisturizing treatment that helps hydrate and soothe your skin for a healthier looking complexion. It is recommended for combination skin and sells for about $3.50 at Target.

Ideally it would’ve been a type of mask that would have let me try out the sponges from the Walmart box, but it was a single use sheet mask. Ah well . . .

The second Indy brand is a Sinful Colors nail polish. The website states that it is Toluene, Formaldehyde and DBP Free. It is made in the USA and sells for under $2 a bottle.

Again–I feel the box is a good value for the price. It had two products from brands that are new to me.

Have you tried either of these boxes? Which is your favorite? Let me know in the comments below.

Praise for Heart & Mind:

“The author has managed to weave an intricate web about being true to yourself. One shouldn’t be guided or led by others. Above all, feel the magic in your own heart. As the fairy godmother believes sometimes it is best not to mess with destiny.” –Chief, USN Ret…VT Town—a Top 500 Reviewer on Amazon.com

Praise for The World In Front of Me:

“Picked up this short story because I noted it was previously published in Penumbra, which was a pretty high quality publication. And this story lived up to my expectations for a professional quality piece.

The story’s main idea reminded me a lot of the Lakeside community in Neil Gaimon’s American Gods, but I won’t say anymore about that for fear of giving away spoilers. But fans of Gaimon should really enjoy this story. Fans of strong women who make tough choices should enjoy this as well”—KSluss—Review on Amazon.com

Praise for Going Home:

“This is an excellent short story that is full of surprises for the reader. Martial law is about to be imposed in the colony.

A secret room, trips on a train and a clandestine meeting are all part of this superb short story.

Most highly recommended”—Off Grid . . . And Loving It—a Top 500 Reviewer on Amazon.com

Praise for Wonderland:

“The writing is beautiful, the characters are complex and thoroughly developed and the story is fascinating. All of it together creates a world you don’t want to leave when the book ends. I am so glad I discovered this author and I cannot wait for her next book”—Mary—Review on Amazon.com

  1. I would vote that they are worth it, especially if they were all natural. Do you know of any subscription boxes that are all natural? I would love to find one. I have bought or received as a gift, special boxes from Lush and100% Pure. I look at their sites from time to time for deals, but they don’t have them often.

    1. I don’t know of any others that are 100% natural. Ipsy includes a lot of natural/vegan products in their bags, but they also have a few items that are not. I actually found a lot of the natural brands that I like in Ipsy bags.
