Dulce de leche is a thick, creamy caramel sauce traditionally made with milk and sugar that has been simmered together for seven hours. The slow-cooker (crock pot) method allows you to monitor the color of the caramel. Plus the end result is an instant gift!
- 2 fourteen-ounce cans of Sweetened Condensed Milk
- 6 four-ounce Canning Jars
- 1 Slow Cooker (Crock Pot)
Divide the condensed milk among the 6 four-ounce canning jars. Secure the lids. Place in the slow cooker. Add enough water to cover the jars by 1 inch. Cook on low for 11 to 12 hours or until think and richly colored. Remove the jars from the slow cooker with tongs. Cool to room temperature and refrigerate.
The jars can last in the refrigerator for up to 3 weeks. A spoon of this stirred into a cup of hot coffee adds a wonderful creamy flavor. And it is wonderful when spread on top of cake!
